Saturday May 24th.the Anacortes Museum opened an exhibit honoring prominent residents of Anacortes past and present.
Featured among the Honorees was Barbara Amerman, the first Executive/Director of the American Red Cross in Anacortes and the San Juan Islands.
Her devotion to underprivileged residents of our community lives on in the "Amerman Fund" which to this day provides a variety of services to Fidalgo Island residents facing severe economic hardship ranging from homelessness to loss of heat, light and water in their homes. The original "Shoe Fund" hasn't gone away; it has simply been expanded to include clothing, assistance with utility bills, propane for home heating, gasoline to get to work, all subject to guidelines established by the Board of Directors of the Anacortes Chapter.
The opening reception was graced by the presence of Sally Amerman Scott, Barbara Amerman's daughter and her grand-daughter Autumn Scott.
The Amerman Fund is strictly segregated from all other funds in the Red Cross system. No Red Cross funds can be used to support the Amerman function; no Amerman funds can be used for any reason other than the stated objectives.

Sally Amerman Scott and Tom Gellatly Ex-Volunteer Red Cross Chapter Manager.
Major contributors to the Amerman Fund have included:
- Soroptimist International of Anacortes.
- Anacortes Noon Kiwanis Club.
- Westminster Presbyterian Church.
- Christ Episcopal Church.
- United Methodist Women.
- St Vincent de Paul.
- Many other groups and individual donors who know about the fund and support its goals.
Our thanks to all of you!
